Ozymandias gets the world to think Dr. M. was to blame for some massive explosions, thus forcing Russia and the US to make peace against Dr. M, who goes into space after the movie to become God and make some life himself. Also, Rorschach’s journal is found by a newspaper after he is silenced by Dr. M. to protect the lie, which means the whole ending is probably in vain anyways.
Now that I ruined the movie for anyone stupid enough to come in here even with the title marking this thread as a spoiler zone, we can get on with the arguments.
I liked Watchmen. I don’t like Zac Snyder. 90% of the film was in slow-mo. Take out the slow-mo or limit it to once every twenty minutes at most, and the movie would have been a good hour shorter.
I definitely liked the characters and the overall plot, even if it gets a bit muddled and ends up tripping over itself several times (all the scenes of Rorschach in jail were filler, Night Owl x Silk Spectre came off as fanservice, etc.)
I also didn’t like the moral. Killing millions of people, killing anyone, is A-OK if you save more lives than what you destroy? I can’t buy into that. A murderer is a murderer.
I also felt that the “new, film-only” ending was ripped off from TDK. Using a lie to protect people, etc.
As far as sbf’s comparisons to TDK, I feel they’re way off base. TDK was too dark? A little girl was fed to dogs, Rorschach’s mom was a prostitute, it’s mentioned child pornography is practically legal, etc. So no. TDK was too long? Every scene in TDK moved the plot along. You can say the same for Watchmen, but it felt like some scenes were just needless. And unlike Watchmen, TDK doesn’t rely on slow-mo to pad things out.
Well there’s my thoughts. I’d still rate it a 7.5/10 even with my complaints.
